ObjectWeb? is an open-source software community created at the end of 1999 by Bull?, FranceTelecom? R&D and INRIA?. Its goal is the development of open-source distributed middleware, in the form of flexible and adaptable components. These components range from specific software frameworks and protocols to integrated platforms. ObjectWeb? developments follow a systematic component-based approach.

(Networked european software & services initiative)

Promoted by thirteen major European ICT corporations, totalling almost a million jobs and about 300 B€ revenues, the NESSI Technology Platform aims to provide a unified view for European research in Services Architectures and Software Infrastructures that will define technologies, strategies and deployment policies fostering new, open, industrial solutions and societal applications that enhance the safety, security and well-being of citizens.

As such the NESSI mission is
to develop a visionary strategy for software and services driv en by a common European
Research Agenda, where innovation and business strength are reinforced by:
  • providing European Industry and the Public Sector with efficient services and software infrastructures to improve flexibility, interoperability and quality;
  • mastering complex software systems and their provision as service oriented utilities;
  • establishing the technological basis, the strategies and deployment policies to speed up the
  • dynamics of the services eco-system ;
  • developing novel technologies, strategies and deployment policies that foster openness, through the increased adoption of open standards and open source software as well as the provision of open services;
  • fostering safety, security and the well-being of citizens by means of new societal applications, enhanced efficiency of industry and administrations, and competitive jobs; hence transforming the European economy into a knowledge based economy and enabling the European software and IT services industry to attain a stronger global position. NESSI operates in the context of a wide continuum of information and communication technologies, and envisages close collaboration with other global research initiatives.

(CALIBRE : Co-ordination Action for Libre Software Engineering for Open
Development Platforms for Software and Services)

CALIBRE est un projet 6ème PCRD de l'UE d'Action de Coordination,
regroupant les personnalités clés en matière de logiciel libre. CALIBRE
rassemble un consortium de 12 équipes de recherche universitaires et
dans l'industrie venant d'Espagne, France, Irlande, Italie, Pays-Bas,
Pologne, Royaume-Uni, Suède et Chine.

Ce projet d'une durée de 2 ans va :
  • mettre en place un forum sur la politique de recherche en logiciel
  • libre pour l'industrie Européenne
  • favoriser le transfert effectif des best-practice du logiciel
  • libre vers l'industrie Européenne
  • intégrer et coordonner la recherche et la pratique européennes en
  • matière de logiciel libre

COSPA


COSPA - Consortium for Open Source in the Public Administration

The Consortium aims at analysing the effects of the introduction of Open Data Standards (ODS) and Open Source (OS) software for personal productivity and document management in European PAs.
  • 15 European participants from Italy, Hungary, Denmark, UK, Ireland, Belgium
  • 3 international "observers" from Canada, New Zealand and UNESCO
  • Funded within the IST (Information Society Technologies) Priority of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6)

Eclipse


Industry leaders Borland?, IBM?, MERANT?, Software Systems?, Software?, Hat?, SuSE?, TogetherSoft? and Webgain? formed the initial eclipse.org Board of Stewards in November 2001. By the end of 2003, this initial consortium had grown to over 80 members.

On Feb 2, 2004 the Eclipse Board of Stewards announced Eclipses reorganization into a not-for-profit corporation. Originally a consortium that formed when IBM released the Eclipse Platform into Open Source, Eclipse became an independent body that will drive the platforms evolution to benefit the providers of software development offerings and
end-users. All technology and source code provided to and developed by this fast-growing community is made available royalty-free via the Eclipse Public License.
